TASTING NOTES

“Cool-climate” is not a one-dimensional term and has many renditions. Roberts Road vineyard in the eastern Petaluma Gap is a cool-climate site benefiting from coastal air currents that travel a geographic wind tunnel right through the region. This means dramatic temperature drops at night, one of the prerequisites for a cool-climate vineyard. But for about a 4-hour window, afternoon temperatures can get much higher here than out in Freestone. And that allows us to craft a Sascha Marie Pinot Noir that is full of wonderfully rich fruit and body, while still retaining all the layering and complexity of a cool-climate wine.

Based on Roberts Road, but completed with contributions from four other sites, we assembled this blend intending to create a cellar star, yet find ourselves reaching for it early and often. Darker and more densely packed than its siblings in our lineup, Sascha’s bursts with black fruits – black cherry, framboise and dark plums. All backed up by brooding earth and mineral notes made complete with 60% new French oak. Balance is always the name of the game, but you can be sure this Pinot has a full personality and veritably gushes with flavor. In a word? Yum!
