Tasting Notes

A blend of Syrah Noir from Ray Teldeschi’s Dry Creek Valley ranch (the starting point for many Kalen’s blends over the years), and the Alban 1 and 470 Syrah clones from Greywacke Vineyard high on a hill in the Russian River Valley. The ripe, lush fruit from Dry Creek combines with the spicy, smoky, gamey and layered Greywacke blocks to produce a Kalen’s of impressive stature while showcasing both structure and refinement.

Inky purple in color, with a dark, brooding nose of blueberry, black cherry compote, and a touch of crème brulée. The palate shows equally dark fruit, lifted by notes of white pepper and graphite. Broad and lush, yet with excellent acidity and tannin, this edition of Kalen’s has all the richness of our best vintages, embellished by a new level of depth and complexity. A young, tight, big Syrah at pre-release, we recommend aging into late 2012 — at least! — before opening your first bottle, and predict the wine will enter its peak drinking window during the second half of 2013 or later.
