Steiner

BENNETT VALLEY

vineyard stats

Our first year sourcing Syrah from this historic site on Sonoma Mountain was 2010, when we pulled from young contiguous blocks planted to Alban 1, Alban Power Block, and ENTAV 470 clones of Syrah. Because 2010 was a very cool year punctuated by the threat (and then very real occurrence) of heavy rains in mid-October, we chose to harvest this fruit a bit earlier than we would have liked. If weather co-operates in the future, we will likely harvest this close to Halloween, which will allow the Syrah to ripen further and produce a medium to full wine that nonetheless remains elegant, in the style of our older vintages from Dry Stack Vineyard. Yields are low in this difficult climate, averaging 2 tons to the acre or less so far, though this is likely to hit 3 tons per acre as these new blocks become more established. A barrel of the 2010 Steiner Syrah added a nice spicy and herbal layer to our Kalen's Big Boy Blend. Should all go well, we hope to someday bottle a vineyard designate.
