Roberts RoadSONOMA COAST | PETALUMA GAPWe began working with this site in 2009 and the resulting wines have been integral components of both our Small Town and Sascha Marie Pinot Noirs. We pull from two adjacent blocks, one planted to Swan clone and the other to Dijon 777. The Swan was planted in 1998 and yields incredibly tiny clusters, both in berry number and berry size. As a result, the block is pruned to carry more clusters per vine than any other Pinot we work with, then thinned as necessary dependent upon the vintage. The 777 block was grafted over in 2009, so our first year produced a smaller, later ripening crop, although it seemed to catch up to the Swan in 2010. Moving forward we expect that both clones will come in at roughly the same time, probably toward the last week of September in a "normal" year, and both should yield a little under 3 tons to the acre. As a component in two of our Pinot bottlings, the Roberts Road brings lively fruit flavors and nice body, rounding out the finished wine by adding a bit of extra texture and weight. Because the Robert’s Road fruit produces generally riper, bolder flavors, it often does well with more heavily toasted, higher impact barrels, but we keep the percentage of new oak below 50% so the fruit can still take center stage. |
