Sabrina Ward Harrison

Sabrina Ward Harrison

“Two years ago I ended up in a field of grass hip high. This is where I began to make the body of work that has come to be called The True Living Project. In many ways The True Living Project began long before I was born. I am striving to create both a visual and emotional unfolding through the textural interchange of photography, sound, collage, film and found objects. A sort of moving book docu~poem. As you observe, as you listen, may you rest into that place where this moment and its memory exist.

The allowing of imaginative experience that pivots between dance and document. To hold the space for both the heart longing and the heart unfolding. This poetic gap between the seen and the felt is where we discover our living.”

Sabrina is the creator of four published books of her journals, the first one being published at the age of 23 while still in college: Spilling Open — The Art of Becoming Yourself, Villard 1999; Brave on the Rocks — If You Don't Go You Don't See, Villard 2001; Messy Thrilling Life — the Art of Figuring Out How to Live, Villard 2004; and The True and the Questions — A Journal, Chronicle Books 2005, based on the teaching of The Art of Becoming Yourself — a course she created in 1996 with a belief that she holds strong to, that we must create what we most need to find.

“These books are to me my life in progress, these are the field notes to myself revealed as, perhaps, emotional documents of permission. Although in form made up of much of the same texture, they remain complete in their form and stand in a separate process category from all other work I make.”

Sabrina has been an inspiration of mine ever since I came across her first book Spilling Open in 2000. Inside it were beautifully soulful images and writing that spoke to me in such an honest, personal manner. Sabrina was introduced to us by a dear friend and we are grateful to both of them for bringing Sabrina’s work to our customers and friends. We hope you are touched by her vision, as we have been. — Colleen
